
After Bastian received his master's degree in computer science the pair again joined forces to design a word processing system for the city of Orem's Data General Corp. The two collaborated in devising a software program which would display band formations in three-dimensional graphics. WordPerfect traces its roots to a partnership which began in 1976 between Bruce Bastian, a Brigham Young University (BYU) graduate student and director of BYU's marching band, and BYU computer science professor Alan Ashton.

The company is additionally recognized as the software industry leader in providing customer support for its products, which are offered in 28 languages and marketed throughout the world by more than 55 international affiliates serving nearly 120 countries. Its products serve three principal markets: business, work group, and consumer applications. Along with its flagship WordPerfect word processing program, the company develops and markets software for a variety of computer operating systems.
